A quick podcast.

I am sick.

Next episode is going to be picking up loose threads and dangling topics from previous episodes, it should be fun and eclectic.

A change in the podcast format.  I will be creating a small new segment where I will be talking about motherhood and my son.

I'm back!  Finally!  And very very late.  But I'm back.

Thank you to all my listeners who "Liked" the podcast on Facebook and got in touch with me during my unplanned hiatus.

We talk about why I was gone 1) sick 2) work 3) no microphone

I will talk more about my awesome Madrona experience as we get closer to Madrona 2012.

Those of you who are in the area may consider attending Interweave's Knitting Lab and listening to talks by Barbara Walker and Alice Starmore.

Stash and Burn Podcast

We talk about jumpstarting your motivation once plan A has failed you.

1) Stay Positive!

2) Use a more powerful motivator than your cravings.  I refer to this RadiolLab episode called "Help!"

3) Reevaluate your goals.  Are you keeping your eyes on the prize?

4)  Figure out what's stopping you

5)  Be realistic

6)  Be creative

Netflix.com has the exercise video I've been using here.  Turns out it is also available on Hulu.com here.

Knitting and Spinning update:

Evenstar Shawl progress continues and I feel like I'm almost done!  The floss threader was definitely more successful than the SuperFloss for putting on beads.

Spinning:  Thanks to an impromptu 3 ply project, I have learned to Andean ply!

This website helped me a lot! (on www.Mielkesfarm.com)

It was raining pretty hard that day, so no exterior shot, I'm afraid.  You can get an idea of the cool Sheep that look out onto the street here.  And also a bit of the spindle selection.

Beth has some of the softest roving ever.

The main desk.  That's Beth in the middle, Chelsea on the side, and the beautiful wool that was delivered that day front and center.  For an even better picture of Beth, download the podcast file.

In the back room, you can explore and pick up some wool from all sorts of sheep breeds

Another view of the back room, including my fancy recording setup :)  See the Greatwheel?

From Peru.  Babywearing and spinning.  I love it!

I bought this zippered bag.  Besides the zipper, the pouch is all made on the loom, including the seam.  Impressive!

A special edition of the podcast!

I went to spend some time at The Spinning Loft in Howell, MI at the end of December.   This is not exactly a Yarn Crawl episode, more of an unfettered conversation with the funny and knowledgeable Beth Smith.

Rule of thumb guide for what you can make with fiber by weight:

2-3 oz wrist warmers or fingerless mitts (or edging on a larger project)

4 oz mittens or a hat

6-8 oz scarf

1 lb vest

1.5-2 lb sweater

Add an ounce for sampling

Here are some of the workshops coming up at the Spinning Loft.  I know I was plotting some way to make it over there for some of these:

January 2011 Abby Franquemont / Backstrap Weaving

March 2011 Stephanie Pearl McPhee /  Knitting for speed and efficiency

April 2011 Anne Field of Spinning Wool:  Beyond the Basics

May 2011 Lisa Klakulak of Strong Felt / Wet felting

June 2011 Miriam Felton of Twist & Knit

July 2011 Jacey Boggs / Boucles

August 2011  Deb Menz / Dyeing intensive

September 2011 Amy King

October 2011 Sarah Lamb / Weaving with painted warps for clothing

November 2011 Shannon Okey / Recycled sweaters

Small Talk: Organizing around the house,

Getting a Dog (now does that pet allergy podcast make sense?)

Garden update

If you missed the Yarn Crawl episode for Grandma's Yarns and Notions in Lancaster, it is filed before Episode 16

New Segment!  Listener Quick Tip

First a tip from me, Preserved Lemons.  Recipe here.

Tip from Chris (chrisimon on Ravelry).  Check out the business cards from Moo

Joints:

Where two bones come together in the body.

Many layers and elements involved: skin, muscle, tendons, ligaments, synovial fluid, cartilage, bone, and nerves.

Next week, arthritis and its treatment

Getting organized to do a complicated knitting project

Get your pattern secured and hands free

Figure out your needles

Get a way to secure your beads (if needed)

Find a container that makes it easy to get set up and start knitting when you have a chance

Classroom space with Sweater Class in progress.  Nancy is in purple sitting on the sofa arm.

Straight and circular pyrex needles

A closer look at the crochet hooks.  They also come with clear handles.
